Bruce M @BruceMc Apr 23 "Presumed Innocent" was a huge hit when it came out, and holds up fairly well. Good direction, a good script and a great supporting cast overcome Harrison Ford's bland performance. Greta Scacchi doesn't have much to do but be beautiful, and the fetching Bonnie Bedelia is terrific as Ford's wife. Basically just a courtroom drama, but Alan Pakula's direction is crisp and the movie never drags. The victim, an ambitious colleague with whom he had an affair, was investigating a corruption case involving names close to power. The film creates a constant doubt about his guilt, especially since the victim appears manipulative, using his seduction as a lever of influence. Despite the very 90s elegance of the staging and the music of John Williams, the atmosphere remains sticky, almost tinged with giallo in the stylization of the crime and the moral ambiguity. Between lies, guilt and secret lives, the story questions intimate responsibility beyond the judicial verdict. The acquittal does not dispel the trouble, and the final, chilling reversal shuffles all the cards. I'm pretty doubtful that real attorneys at this level are so inept that the judge has to call the objections for them.
