Experiences of high school prom night seem to fall into two distinct, warring factions: Firstly, come the popular kids, who love to dress up, get a date, and go to the prom to have the one of the greatest nights of their lives. Secondly, come the awkward kids, who detest the prom and can't imagine anything worse than attending it. Filmmaker Hali Lee attended her prom in Kansas City, and falls into the latter camp. However, having hated the experience, she subsequently became fascinated by it in her post-high school days, and decided to make this movie on the subject. Returning to Kansas to speak to a number of potential prom attendees, Lee gleans some interesting and amusing observations on the ritual from a diverse selection of subjects. The results are endlessly fascinating regardless of your own personal take on prom night, making PROM NIGHT IN KANSAS CITY a worthy addition to the canon of documentary filmmaking. [More]
