Kim is a very familiar sort of addict: with no actual self-esteem, but with a huge ego that makes everyone around her uncomfortable. She covers up mountains of shame with what she thinks is a witty, sophisticated veneer. It's sometimes excruciating to watch. Meanwhile her family circles her in various states of codependency, alternating between behaving like things are normal, setting occasional boundaries, trying to genuinely engage her, and expressing anger for the ways she's hurt them. They have no idea how to behave or what to do. It all feels immensely real. It’s a fairly simple film that centers around Kym, a recovering addict, returning home for her sister’s wedding weekend. It deliberately showcases layered, complicated family dynamics dealing with simmering under the surface undealt with trauma, guilt and grief. The film does this through natural conversations and interactions between seemingly regular people, all the more making this experience relatable and as if moments like these can just pass you by. It’s all subtle and you’ll need to understand these characters and their relationships well to get it - and the film does a good job of letting us know that via nonverbal cues or slightly tense encounters. The camera work also gives off the vibe of a home video, kind of sloppy, and like “you” were a person invited and witnessing the procession alongside everyone else. Like we’re dropped into the situation, with a plethora of atmospheric shots from guests dancing and having a good time, the wedding procession itself or reactions from everyone else during speeches. You end up feeling for everyone - the upright sister holding everything together, the dad trying their best and tiptoeing around, the mom who avoids the hurt and keeps a safe distance or our main protagonist as she is getting her life together whilst struggling with a tough disease, blame and constant pressure amidst a loved ones’ big day. No one feels like a bad guy or a good guy - you feel empathy for every single person and understand where they are coming from. It’s a great exercise to look into our own family dynamics, reflect on other people’s perspectives and see how we can approach things the best we can.
