When his cellmate, Nick, is suddenly killed, Rudy decides to take on his identity in order to meet Nick's beautiful pen-pal girlfriend, Ashley (Charlize Theron). The couple has fun until her psychotic brother, Gabriel (Gary Sinise), shows up. Gabriel and his gang want to hold up a casino where Nick had once worked, and they blackmail Rudy/Nick into going along with the scheme. Rudy has to bluff his way through the crime, pretending to be Nick in order to avoid being killed while trying to sabotage the plans of the bad guys. Will Rudy be able to outsmart the bad guys, or will he end up facedown in the snow? Double crosses abound in this frosty film noir action movie boasting a twisty script by writer Ehren Kruger (SCREAM 3, ARLINGTON ROAD) and assured direction by veteran John Frankenheimer (THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE, RONIN), plus a sneaky sense of humor and plenty of Christmas references. A film noir with a bracing twist of black comedy.

Reindeer Games is basically a test of your ability to accept a slushpile of implausible twisteroos and Tarantino-style conceits.

Watchable but sometimes quite ludicrous.

Narratively, the movie is similar to a casino game: you're not sure where you are and the house has the advantage.

It just vanishes from between your ears like cotton-candy in a tropical rainstorm, leaving nothing but a slightly sickly aftertaste.

The end is a long time coming in Reindeer Games and the dialogue is mostly slush.

The movie is often amusing, thanks to Affleck's excellent deadpan delivery of flippant lines in the face of loaded guns and to Sinise's scenery-chewing villain.

It's a heist without a plan, a crime without a brain, a thriller without a decent script.

Frankenheimer ... treats this trashy, disreputable material with a brute squareness so leaden and dour it's practically Teutonic.
