Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer (Billie Mae Richards) realizes his famous red nose is getting dim. Santa Claus (Mickey Rooney) explains that the glow was provided years ago by Lady Borealis to make sure he could make it through a storm created by the evil Winterbolt (Paul Frees), ruler of the North Pole. Lady Borealis put a spell on Winterbolt that sent him into a deep sleep, but now the villain is awake and trying to draw Frosty the Snowman into a plot to extinguish Rudolph's nose for good.

The attempts to turn these corny stories into some sort of epic strain with flopsweat, and the hoped-for Avengers-style team-up of the company's big two mostly results in scenes where you wonder why Frosty's not melting in the middle of July.

Overall, it's a quirky special with some of the best Animagic Rankin/Bass ever did, but it's a long 97 minutes... If you're willing to make the time for it, it's worth the view.

The idea of crossing over Rudolph and Frosty is logical, because they were the company's two most popular character (aside from maybe Santa Claus), but the way it actually happens is just nuts.

This was a great movie other than one thing. King Winterbolt said to the dragons that they needed to prepare for the final showdown, but they never came, instead six snakes came and I don’t know if he used his magic on the dragons and made them into snakes or something, but it was never told. Other than that, this was a Must-See movie! They put a long time of work into this and it turned out really good. They did a great job at the mixture of stop-motion animation and animation. It looked really real and I know that some other people will really enjoy it. My little brother and I really enjoyed it. Great job Rankin and Bass! - From my 9yr old son

I'll vouch for this movie.. It's not perfect, but that's kind of the fun and charm of these R&B stop motion movies. The plot is not so traditional, so if you're watching it through that lens, it's a miss. The plot/characters are complex and the atmosphere a bit heavy/emotional. The stop motion is quite polished from when you compare it to earlier R&B movies, and a treat to watch on its own as an animation fan, as is the voice acting. Plus you get Ethel Merman solos, what's not to love? Probably my favorite character design for Rudolph as well, the artists did him justice, and he comes across as quite lovable in this one.

Genuinely 1 1/2 hours of misery in film form. I cannot express how unenjoyable every second was. I truly believe that everyone on the staff was depressed based on the way every character was written.
