Movie Info

Filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich turns to the documentary form for the first time with this lengthy profile of one of rock and roll's enduring talents. Tom Petty: Running Down A Dream presents an in-depth look at Petty's life and career and his work with his long-time band the Heartbreakers, ranging from Petty's earliest musical influences (which includes meeting Elvis Presley when the King came to Florida to shoot a movie when Petty was just eleven years old) to the critical and commercial success

The band is treated reverently, which will no doubt please fans, but its eternal length may test the dedication of even Petty fanatics.

It's great that Petty's relevance and longevity has apparently rubbed off on Bogdanovich.

Although frequently taken for granted, Tom Petty has had more hits than Bruce Springsteen and stands as one of America's finest rock 'n' roll stars. This movie is like ice cream; you just can't get enough.

Employs a warm and leisurely, though never sluggish, pace that's upfront about Bogdanovich's intention to take his sweet time tackling every topic of relevant interest.

Audience Reviews for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream

I am a huge Tom Petty fan. So much that I sat in front of my TV for four hours to watch this doc without a break. The performances are the best stuff (having already read the book and knowing most of Petty's history) and some home video footage are what I found most compelling. To think that he worked with all these

Lengthy, but awesome doc on one of the most underrated bands in the history of rock n' roll. A must see for all music fans.
