The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash (1978)

Movie Info

A mockumentary of a Beatles-like singing group called the Rutles, The Rutles is a collaboration between Monty Python alumnus Eric Idle and Saturday Night Live filmmaker Gary Weis. The members of the "pre-Fab Four" are Nasty, Barry, Stig, and Dirk. There really isn't any plot, just a series of vignettes, unctuously narrated by Idle, which mercilessly skewer the Beatles mythology. Under the guidance of agent Leggy Mountbatten (before he tragically takes a teaching post in Australia), the Rutles

Many sequences are modeled closely on news footage of key events in The Beatles' much-documented career, and the overall effect is so close to reality that it's downright eerie.

Dead-on Beatles parody made with love and great pastiche songs by Bonzo Dog Band front man Neil Innes.

Eric Idle's introduction sees him readopt his "reporter" persona from the film some 20 years on. The humour, unfortunately, is also caught in a timewarp.

A modestly amusing Pythonesque riff on the Beatles phenomenon.

If you've never heard of the Rutles, you'll be astounded to discover all they gave to the world of entertainment... and the realm of snarky, witty comedy.

Audience Reviews for The Rutles: All You Need Is Cash

A hilarious all star spoof of the Beatles movies and image in general. If you're a fan of the Beatles and/or of Monty Python and Saturday Night Live type shows, you will love this movie.

Funny movie! It makes a joke of the Beatles perfectly. "Rutles" is a dumb name for a band. I like their cheap songs which throw fun at the originals.
