Lacks the wit necessary to compensate for its stereotypical characterizations and predictable plot elements.

At the center of things is Markus (writer-director Casper Andreas) a brokenhearted gay writer whose straight female friend, Marilyn (Virginia Bryan) gets him a summer job at the garden restaurant where she works, and where she's the only one who isn't an attractive single gay male. Soon he soon falls under the tutelage of the gleefully promiscuous Luke (Jesse Archer) who recommends spending the summer sleeping around as a surefire heartbreak cure. He does, but then Markus falls for Tyler (Jamie Hatchett), the dreamboat Welsh model on the staff, and things get even more complicated. Meanwhile, Marilyn turns to the Internet for love with the help of starry-eyed idealist Peter (Jeffrey Christopher Todd). A few soapy moments aside, this is a fast-paced, intelligent indie romantic comedy that deserves to find an audience beyond just the gay community. Even so, there's plenty of shirtless eye candy. What sets this film apart is its genuinely likable and complex performances: Archer is hilarious and Hatchett is a smoldering natural. But it is Bryan whose impeccable comedic timing and fearless vulnerability provide the film with its emotional center of gravity. She offers an excellent counterbalance to all the boy-on-boy action. It all adds up to a real sleeper of a film--a big festival favorite--with characters to care about and excellent camerawork by Jon Fordham that really captures the feel of the city and the hectic pace of restaurant life. Reviews for Slutty Summer
The wooden dialogue and overall shallowness of the writing keep the film from being even an amiable diversion.
The film is a labor of love for Casper Andreas, who wrote, directed and starred in this first feature. For the actors he has chosen, it's a labor of lust, with copious necking and grappling required. For the audience, it's just a labor.
Decently acted and briskly directed -- but thoroughly predictable and sometimes achingly sincere.
First-timer Casper Andreas approaches his subject with the subtlety of a wrecking ball.
