Griffith (INTOLERANCE, BIRTH OF A NATION). Disguised as the well-dressed Prince Lucia de Rimanez, the devil promises Cortez wealth and fame beyond his wildest dreams; the price being that Tempest must obey all of the Prince's commands. One of these commands is to marry a decadent Russian Princess (Lya de Putti). Alas, Tempest finds that even his new wealth and fame are nothing without his old love, the true-hearted Mavis Claire (Carole Dempster) by his side. The devil's identity is revealed and all hell breaks loose as good and evil square off in a time-honored battle for Geoffrey's soul. This was Griffith's first feature for Paramount, after being an independent film giant for many years, and the story--adapted a popular Maria Correlli novel--was allegedly assigned to him despite his protestations. However, the resulting film is one of his more charmingly light-hearted efforts, with Menjou a memorable Prince, and Ms. Dempster fine as the stoically suffering Claire. [More]
