See more Nathan H @RT05290795 May 14 Spawn is a gritty, ambitious 90s superhero film that takes a very different approach from the glossy comic book movies that followed it. It leans heavily into dark fantasy and horror elements, giving the story a brooding atmosphere that still stands out today. Spawn also benefits from a solid central performance by Michael Jai White, who brings real weight and intensity to Al Simmons’ transformation and internal conflict. The villain, The Clown, is chaotic and memorable, adding a twisted sense of personality to the film’s darker tone. The story itself can feel a bit rushed and uneven, especially in the second half where the plot juggles too many ideas at once. But underneath that, there’s a surprisingly emotional core about betrayal, loss, and choosing what kind of monster you become. Overall, Spawn isn’t perfect, but it’s bold, weird, and visually distinctive enough to earn its place as a cult favorite. The CGI holds the movie back more than anything, it probably could have been salvaged if it had a higher budget or nixed the cgi. The story was very flat and the acting was beyond weak for the most part. Michael and Leguizamo held what was left of the ship afloat. The two were both very into their characters and the only people with decently written dialogue, Leguizamo’s grotesque charisma and MJW’s vengeful passion kept my interest until the final scenes. The director did those two dirty. See more Ryan C. @djrmc24 Apr 25 Spawn is an interesting film because on one end it’s trying to replicate the magic that the animated series and comic book had. On the other hand, it also tries to cater to a PG-13 crowd, which it has no business doing. The final product here is a very low budget, bad CGI, and generic story that is uninteresting. The only saving grace here is Michael Jai Whites commitment to the character and his banter back in forth with John Leguizamo. Not sure why Martin Sheen signed on to play in this movie. The villian he gets to play is so bad and laughable all the way through. There are moments where you can see a slight glimpse of hope and cool sequences but they are very minimal. I really hope that Spawn gets remade someday and justice is done to the character. Spawn gets a low 1 1/2 stars out of 5. See more Read all reviews
