I watched half of it and shut it off due to boredom, then watched the 2nd half on another day. The aliens name was "Jerry", a name we have to hear Dustin Hoffman repeat incessantly hundreds or thousands of times. "Jerry, Jerry, is that you Jerry? Where are you Jerry? Jerry. Jerry. Jerry. Talk to me Jerry, Jerry?". The ending featured no big reveal. The characters came to a conclusion, there was no evidence we got to see that supported that conclusion, then decided to "forget". I wish I had the power to forget watching this movie. See more Richard L @KaneLives May 23 A competently made 'Abyss-like' which suffers from the exact same problem Cameron's technical masterpiece did - it takes an intriguing concept and does painfully little with it. It doesn't help that there are no real characters beside the excellent Hoffman, and the film's internal logic falls apart at the slightest scrutiny - but these things could have been forgiven had the writers (or Crichton, I suppose; I haven't read the book) really pushed the possibilities of what they had created. Instead, we are left with a whole lot of unfulfilled potential - and only Cameron's crazy enough to go far enough to make something like that watchable. See more Andrew G @RT54047964 Apr 21 The basic premise of Sphere was interesting, but the execution of it was fairly lackluster. The story could have been developed better. It suffers from a cheesy script with too much play-by-play narration by the characters during the attack scenes. The jerky filming during action sequences was annoying instead of suspenseful or fear building. Editing during the action sequences was the kind you see in low budget indie films: shake the camera and quick-cut from character to character. Sharon Stone was the standout actor; Peter Coyote was adept at making his character untrustworthy. Hoffman and Jackson could have phoned it in. Even with its shortcomings it generated enough entertainment for me to give it a 60% rating. And the ending left the door open for a sequel that could tie back to the beginning of the film and give more exposition to the original story. Imagine a prequel-sequel better than the original! Maybe someday? EVER. It is a vast waste of time and resources. The writing is absolutely horrific and the directing is almost as bad if not worse, since the guy didn't even try to save the movie at all. These people should be put in prison for wasting everyone's time. I feel bad for the actors since usually they are excellent...but this film gave them zero hope of making it watchable at all. This movie functions better as a torture device than work of art. It's almost as if they had a similar script as event horizon but just made it worse. 80 million dollars wasted on helping people waste their lives.
