The film treats childcare as an exclusively female battleground, forcing Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon into a bitter competition over domestic duties while Ed Harris’s father figure gets a "free pass" from any actual parenting. By framing Isabel’s career as a hurdle to being a "good woman" and Jackie’s over-parenting as a spiritual calling, the movie ignores the father's responsibility entirely. It’s a glossy drama that suggests a woman’s only true value is found in the nursery, leaving the men to watch from the sidelines. In addition to its regressive gender roles, the film’s "Thanksgiving Pageant" scene serves as a jarring example of 1990s cultural blindness. By having the children dress in "Construct-A-Native" costumes and perform a sanitized, storybook version of the holiday, the movie completely erases the historical reality of colonial genocide. The film beautifully captures how difficult motherhood is—the endless considerations, the constant care, and the lingering fear of not being good enough for your children. The late-night dancing scene was so much fun and brought a great lightness to the story. It was also incredibly moving when Jackie gave her children their Christmas gifts, which were so carefully made to preserve the memory of the happy time they had together. I also have a lot of respect for Isabel; her determination to step up, give it her best effort, and take good care of the kids is inspiring. Ultimately, it’s so heartwarming to know that these children will grow up in a family completely filled with love.
