Consensus: Kevin Bacon's acting is so genuine that it's creepy and director David Keopp knows how to create true suspense.

Runtime: 1 hr 39 mins

Genre: Horror/Suspense

Synopsis: Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon), husband and father of a precocious young son, finds his blue-collar Chicago existence altered after he is hypnotized at a neighborhood party. What started as a diversion... Tom Witzky (Kevin Bacon), husband and father of a precocious young son, finds his blue-collar Chicago existence altered after he is hypnotized at a neighborhood party. What started as a diversion turns disturbing as a post-hypnotic suggestion releases a subconscious power Tom didn't know he had. Maggie (Kathryn Erbe), his wife, grows increasingly concerned with the strange behavior of her husband and her son, as they become obsessed with the notion that there is an otherworldly presence living in their house. Plagued by searing headaches, horrific visions and the fear that his family is in grave danger, Tom is compelled to discover the source of the visions, even if it means unearthing a horrible neighborhood secret. Stir of Echoes is much more down and dirty, and the thrills are more visceral.

Although it shares some basic plot points with Sixth Sense, it is more of a traditional thriller and plows some very different emotional areas.

The kind of film that may give you pause the next time you walk into a dark room by yourself.

In a taut, grippingly intense performance, Bacon captures the frenetic torment of a man driven to extremes by forces he can't begin to fathom.

Stir of Echoes might have worked just fine a few decades ago, but it now seems too simply schematic to spook us as much as it wants to.

Stir of Echoes is a ghost story and a pretty darn good one.

Koepp has made an interesting but irrelevant parallel between the otherworld and movies.

It has enough smarts to scare us, Sixth Sense or not.

It offers a stir of an echo of horror, rather than the genuine cathartic article.

The first two-thirds of the movie is engagingly spooky, more so than The Sixth Sense.

After a compelling first half, the main echoes that this ghost yarn stirs up are of other movies.

When Stir of Echoes is focused on the supernatural, it is a scary and technically superior film. However, as it turns into a conventional thriller it becomes ordinary.

Stir of Echoes gives a classic ghost story extra zip by insisting on the reality of the characters and their place.
