Movie Info

After establishing herself as a bankable star with the fish out of water comedy Legally Blonde, Reese Witherspoon returns in what could be described as a "fish back in water" comedy. Melanie Carmichael (Witherspoon) is a successful New York fashion designer who is dating Andrew Hennings (Patrick Dempsey), a wealthy socialite whose mother, Katherine Hennings (Candice Bergen), is the Big Apple's mayor. One day, Andrew pops the big question and asks Melanie to marry him; Melanie is overjoyed, but

Would be an unendurable viewing experience for this ultra-provincial New Yorker if 26-year-old Reese Witherspoon were not on hand to inject her pure fantasy character, Melanie Carmichael, with a massive infusion of old-fashioned Hollywood magic.

It's as preposterous and phony as a Confederate C-note, but Reese Witherspoon has so much natural beauty, talent and charm she guarantees more fun than the day the hogs ate Willie.

Despite her relentless vim and winsome facial symmetry, Witherspoon is just too dialed-up to be America's Sweetheart.

Mediocre is too harsh a word-this film is merely average.

Any resemblance to reality is strenuously avoided in a piece of fluff made watchable by Reese Witherspoon. The blonde cookie with a sweet heart and the most formidable Texan twang in Tinseltown is too good to be appearing in lazy formula films.

A romantic comedy, sans much of the comedy, this clunky Reese Witherspoon vehicle glows with the powerful allure of its shiny, irresistible young star but little else.

This is one of my favourite romantic comedies and favourite Reese movie. Excellent rom com about a girl who gets engaged and then has to return to her roots to get divorced from her first husband. Reese is at her best. Good cast and plot.

For a romantic comedy, SWEET HOME ALABAMA was quite an enjoyable--but predictable--film. Starring Reese Witherspoon, Josh Lucas, and Patrick Dempsey, it tells the tale of a northerner who meets a man and immediately falls in love. The problem is she's married to a "redneck" down in Alabama already, so she goes down south to divorce him. There, another problem arises: her husband refuses to sign the papers. It seemed in this film that there was no consistent plot, and it was always just problem after problem after problem coming up. Also, this is quite unoriginal, and it was intended as a comedy, but I didn't see much that was funny in it (or even really aimed at humor). In fact, I saw it more as a romantic drama than a "romcom". Either way, it was a chick flick, and even though I don't usually enjoy that type of film, I found it to be a cute movie, and it was somewhat worth seeing.

    1. Pearl Smooter: Your daddy... Lord, but I was a fool for that man. I couldn't even put one foot in front of the other. I just kept thinkin', "Oh, preacher, hurry up before he changes his mind!" Now that man makes me so crazy sometimes I could wring his neck!
    2. Melanie Carmichael: You still love him, though.
    3. Pearl Smooter: God knows I do. And only He knows why.
