The tale of a Cossack chief who has sworn to be the eternal enemy of the treacherous Poles. So, when his son falls for a beautiful Pole who has saved his life, the father is faced with the dilemma of whether to kill his own flesh and blood as a traitor. This film reinforced the Brynner stereotype as king of the Asiatic wide open spaces.

For every scene in which Brynner lifts the picture, there is an equivalent one where Curtis drags it down. They effectively cancel each other out, so that all that is left is a relatively mediocre horse-and-sword adventure. Go to Full Review

It seems to be in genre form when showing hordes of Cossack horsemen flying across the steppes to do battle. Go to Full Review

R T @crillovision 1d This is honestly one of the worst movies I ever actually paid to see and sat through all the way. It gives hokum a bad name. Tony Curtis seems to be in another movie throughout and the "romance" involves a lot of staring across battlefields at his shimmering lady love miles away. At the screening the audience was actually laughing at these moments. There is not one unpredictable second and the "duel" between Curtis and a big fat guy on horses jumping a chasm is as lame as it sounds. Yul does lots of peppy stuff and singing about drinking (all his men do too) and by the end the song has long overstayed it's welcome. It all has absolutely nothing to do with the source material at all - nothing. If you like vast amounts of horse riders waving weapons repeatedly or truly bad attempts by actors to sound Russian or Baltic or Boris Badinov this is your meat though. On the laugh out loud meter I would actually give it two stars though. I actually watched this in a theater when it was first released. The most vivid part that I remembered on the rewatch were the jumps over the canyon. See more Michael N @RT50823663 09/13/2023 Excellent 👌 Classic Yul Brynner film. Not completely tied to the original Ukrainian folklore but most of the film is true to the original! Time for a Hollywood remake! See more donald d @RT53452709 06/26/2021 Very dated movie, does not come off well in these days. The type of spectacle movie people liked in 1962 is so different than now. The acting was more like a children's movie, than a true war movie. I saw it in 1962 and that was enough. See more 05/16/2019 Cassocks and Polish. Who could ask for more? Historical knowledges helps See more ashley h @ashleyhobgood87 05/19/2016 Taras Bulba is a decent film. It is about Taras who has settled into comfortable farm life after years of adventures and swashbuckling with his cossack companions. Tony Curtis and Yul Brynner give good performances. The screenplay is a little slow in places. J. Lee Thompson did an alright job directing this movie. I liked this motion picture because of the adventure and drama. See more Read all reviews
