A straight-forward look at a group of musicians attempting to revive a near-extinct style of American popular music. It's mostly a by-the-book competition documentary where ordinary people -- office assistant, computer programmer, machine operator, librarian, author, high-school student -- showcase extraordinary talent; in this case reviving remarkably complex pieces of ragtime music (from late 1800s-1920s). The difference with this contest is that the "competition" is more of a celebration of music amongst the entrants...like a COMICON for ragtime piano music. The result is a happy movie with a tremendous amount of heart. I left smiling and oddly enough, feeling patriotic. It's nice. It's wholesome. It's fun. -- saw this at the St. Louis International Film Festival
