Despite some complaints, I still find myself holding my breath during the absolutely bonkers fight scenes. Sure footed in its direction with undeniable choreography & a high quality touch to the filming & editing. Much too long of a runtime yet that helps build anticipation & restraint for when the violence really unfolds. See more John C @RT97228488 Jun 1 The first Raid movie is a 5-star action masterpiece, for its low-budget feel and incredible fight choreography. The fight sequences felt a bit contrived but is forgivable overall due to the grittiness and grimness of the police's hopeless plight and the survive to dawn in a pressure-cooker plot that captures the viewer into believability. The sequel has a completely different feel and sideplots that were a bit confusing and inessential. There was little overall growth of the hero himself. The film's open-ended and yearslong plot to some nebulous goal feels a bit bloated, and the runtime reflects this. The comic-book style characters echoing the cool new villain with their own style at the next boss-level feels like it's catering to a gamer aesthetic. The wispy thin girl with indoor sunglasses fighting with framing hammers and the kid who can hit a baseball deadeye across a distance is to me a bit ludicrous and detracts from the legacy of the first film's more credible feel. The Matrix and John Wick has been done, and Evans failed to create or explore much new space or mythos here given what to an international audience not as familiar with this country might be an interesting exploration of Indonesian culture and politics.
