Movie Info

Master animator Richard Williams (best known for his work on Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) created this visually dazzling full-length cartoon. Tack (voice of Matthew Broderick) is a shy and humble cobbler in love with the beautiful Princess Yum Yum (voice of Jennifer Beals). Tack gets his chance to impress the Princess when he's pressed into service to help defeat a wicked sorcerer, Zigzag (voice of Vincent Price); Tack also runs afoul of a charming but duplicitous thief (voice of Jonathan Winters).

An Aladdin rip-off burdened by songs so dreadful that even Academy voters will refuse to nominate them.

A cartoon legend, a massively ambitious film decades in the making. Even in this butchered, cretinously dumbed-down version, its incredible hubris shines through.

Audience Reviews for Thief and the Cobbler

this 28 yr labor of love by master animator richard williams was virtually destroyed when he lost control of it, leading to the disastrous theatrical cut with matthew broderick and jonathan winters, but thanks to rabid fans and it's near legendary status, his original vision has been reconstructed as nearly as possible, using a workprint, drawings and matte paintings. it's some of the most spectacular animation you'll ever see and includes the last voice work of vincent price. there are now 4 versions of the film but this unofficial fan version follows the workprint very closely and can be seen here: http://youtu.be/E62ibzd8WX4

35 years in the making, but does it hold up? No. This version is just garbage, Vincent Price is enjoyable in this film, and the animation is fantastic, but Tack and the Thief never shut up, and the characters are so stupid.

But the Recobbled Cut im using the rating for rather than the theatrical released film. The characters are much funnier and more enjoyable rather than annoying and not shutting up, Tac and the Thief are actually silent in this, and much funnier. The only problem I have with this film, is the final fight at the end of the film drags on way too long. Sure the animation is nice in the whole scene but it just goes on, and on, and on, to the point that its annoying. But the full picture with all the missing scenes in the film finally put into a film, and the end result is fantastic
