During the fighting John is seriously maimed and disfigured, so he allows himself to be declared dead, changes his name to Erich Kessler, and starts a new life in Austria. Elizabeth eventually remarries, to a man named Larry Hamilton. Twenty years later, the second world war rages, "Erich" returns to the USA, and finds employment in Larry's plant -- where he once again encounters Elizabeth.
