08/13/2012 Full title: 'O Toque do Oboé' Translated title: 'The Call of the Oboe' Running time: 119 mins. Director: Claudio Mac Dowell. Producer: Hugo Gamarra. Starring: Paulo Batti, Laticia Vota, Mario Lozano. Synopsis: The arrival of a Brazilian stranger (Paulo Batti), who is suffering from an unidentified terminal illness, to a small Latin American village captivates the townspeople when they hear him play his oboe. But the town truly comes alive - a centenarian walks for the first time in ten years and then expresses his love to the village prostitute who is thirty years his junior, and the phone exchange operator discovers a line to God - when he is encouraged by a beautiful woman (Laticia Vota) to play music to accompany the silent films being shown at her previously abandoned cinema. Comments: An exceptionally beautiful drama from Brazil with effective touches of humour. The performances are suberb here, particularly from the handsome Paulo Batti and lovely Laticia Vota. The himane screenplay is handled nicely at the competent hands of a director that avoids venturing into melodrama. Maybe a tad too long for some, but 'O Toque do Oboé' is a rewarding experience.
