Consensus: A funny, tender, and thought-provoking film, The Truman Show is all the more noteworthy for its remarkably prescient vision of runaway celebrity culture and a nation with an insatiable thirst for the private details of ordinary lives.

The life of Truman Burbank (Carrey) has been broadcast around the world with tremendous success since the day he was born. A star for the mere fact that he exists, Truman has no idea that there are cameras in every corner of his world. But soon, cracks begin to show in the constructed world, and Truman questions his existence while everyone around him is in on the joke. Weir directs a fine cast, including Laura Linney as Truman's wife and Ed Harris as the show's director. Screenwriter Andrew Niccol also added interesting twists to the scripts for S1M0NE and GATTACA. This is a profound movie for people who don't like to think, or perhaps for people who are in the media and of the media, and can't imagine any life outside it.

The conception is so audacious and inventive that the movie winds up doing something genuinely radical: it bores through the boundaries of our entire media-saturated culture.

I had that rare feeling of elation - of wanting to share a wonderful discovery - that comes with seeing an original, inspired piece of work.

An appealing, offbeat, one-hundred minute diversion for those who really are tired of monsters tearing down buildings and action heroes saving the world.

The latter part of the film, depicting Truman's rebellion and providing him with a perfect final line, is much more conventionally conceived than its splendid start.

One of those high-concept movies whose concept is both clever and dumb.

If Truman becomes a classic it'll be as a witty film of ideas that's graced with a mesmerizing visual dimension.

Carrey turns Truman into a postmodern Capra hero.

The underlying ideas made the movie more than just entertainment. Like Gattaca, the previous film written by Niccol, it brings into focus the new values that technology is forcing on humanity.

A brilliant and daring film that blends charming comedy, affecting drama, thought-provoking satire and even a touch of biblical parable.

This is a film that can stay with one for a very long time after a viewing, and even slightly change the way one looks at life and the world.
