Is Blade Runner 2049 a masterpiece like its predecessor? Definitely not. It's not even a match for 2016's superb Arrival, the previous film from director Denis Villeneuve. Yet on its own terms, it's a dazzling achievement.

I waited so many years for this… I saw the original when it came out on VHS (going to the movies was expensive and I was too young anyway), but let’s get to the feedback without further ado. It’s simply disappointing. Gosling does what he can, but the overall concept never quite works for me. Harrison Ford’s return feels more obligatory than organic to the story: he had to be there and had to survive long enough to witness the forbidden fruit of him and Rachel… anyway. The special effects are okay-ish. Once again, they completely ignore any reference to Mercerism, which was very present in the original novel. And, to be honest, if it had been 45 minutes shorter, I wouldn’t have fallen asleep as I actually did. Blade Runner 2049: two and a half tomatoes, and that’s me being generous.
