Based on the stage play URBAN FOLK TALES, URBANIA follows Charlie (Dan Futterman) through the streets of New York City. Charlie is an ordinary man haunted by the absence of his boyfriend, Chris. After roaming through various bars looking for Chris, hearing and telling unusual and uncanny stories, Charlie encounters Dean (Samuel Ball), a tough young man whom Charlie has met somewhere before, and who may hold the answers to Charlie's existential questions. During the course of his journeys, Charlie keeps running into a number of different urban legends--the woman who cooks her dog in the microwave, the man who wakes up to find he is missing a kidney--all of which serves to make New York City look surreal and unnerving. In addition to the compelling, mysterious plot and skillful acting, URBANIA also features striking cameos from Alan Cumming and Barbara Sukowa, plus a unique look at New York City. URBANIA mixes comedy, drama, film noir, and gay cinema in new and intriguing ways. A directorial debut from Jon Shears, URBANIA moves expertly from present time to flashbacks and flashforwards, never losing its viewers for a second. [More]

One of the boldest entries in 2000 Sundance Fest, Shear's impressive debut is a darkly intriguing drama that probes the nature of love and lasting effects of loss, beautifully played by Dan Futterman (who later became known as the scripter of Capote)

A provocative and cathartic story about the impossibility of retribution and the challenge of redemption.

Superb parts and a muddled whole is one way you can describe this eventually incisive look into one man's homosexuality.
