Frederick R @RT72687800 Oct 12 This is supposed to be a movie about the distintegration of a marriage, but it's not clear to me exactly what the problem is,except that the woman seems very unhappy and the man doesn't seem to care about the woman, yet in the end he tells her he loves her and they make up! It made little to no sense to me. The film seemed more like a vehicle for showing Italian cultural artifacts and sites, like Pompeii, than a meaningful story. The film is supposed to be partially inspired on Colette's novel, Duo. The entire film's dialogue is in English, with locals speaking Italian. The film is generally hailed as one of Roberto Rossellini's greatest works. The plot revolves around an estranged English couple (Ingrid and George) who travel to Naples (Italy) to sell the luxurious villa bequeathed by George's uncle. Ingrid and George do not get along well, and when George decides to visit Capri, he allows Ingrid to enjoy museums and sightseeing. The film focuses on exploring ancient Roman civilization, excavations, Pompeii, Mount Vesuvius, and some religious themes. The subject also addresses mistrust, jealousy, and suspicion. I primarily loved observing and learning about historical sites and artwork. A black and white film that feels tinged with the warmth and colour of its location but the grim company of a fractious marriage. My problem with the film is singular but emphatic the acting of the protagonists is woeful and wildly unrealistic. How the wife could feel anything for the priggish obnoxious and crassly rude husband is beyond me. He needs a proper slapping. The turnaround in their relationship in the space of ten seconds is absurd. Rubbish film but beautiful location shots. See more 08/23/2021 Really not quite sure what the appeal is here to be honest. I found the dialogue to be stunted, and the characters flat with unconvincing reactions to their predicaments. Perhaps this is seen as one of the first of its kind in terms of "personal" filmaking?
