Wolcott Gibbs The New Yorker 10/15/2021
Its great virtue is that it is written about a group of quite commonplace men who have to endure the dirty, tiresome, and murderous business of war as best they can rather than about the picturesque band of heroes usually dispatched from Hollywood. Go to Full Review

Direction by Carol Reed is competent, and undoubtedly accounts for the underlying genuineness of the picture as a semi-documentary. Go to Full Review

Meticulous in its avoidance of Hollywood heroics and refreshingly simple in its few romantic touches. Go to Full Review

Paul G @RT67423558 02/14/2021 A gem of a film which seems ahead of its time. Conscript soldiers who don't want to fight, and don't believe in the cause find their purpose and comradeship. The story builds nicely to a great conclusion. Highlight recommended early ww2 film. See more 08/01/2014 well crafted WWII propaganda pic See more 07/28/2013 Excellent semi-documentary styled WWII propoganda piece about an infantry platoon, from call up to action in North Africa, with David Niven heading up a wonderful cast of British character actors. There is an exciting evacuation from a torpedoed troop ship and the battle at the end is very impressive. See more 08/12/2011 Excellent performance by David Niven. The movie kept my interest. I've seen it all before--the ragtag bunch of draftees becomes a top flight fighting unit. It's good, but I doubt I'll watch it again. This was made during WWII so that gives it a slightly different edge. See more 07/24/2011 though historical;ly inaccurate still worth watching. See more 03/15/2011 This is quite obviously a film which was made to show how great the British army. It shows this not through violence but through training and camaraderie. There are a lot of little hidden propaganda and patriotic messages within the film too. It is a very uplifting war drama which has a fantastic variation of characters. You have the upper class posh talking manager, the simple shop worker, the Scottish labourer and the middle class salesman to name a few. The message being 'weâ(TM)re all in it together'. All of these characters are thrown together when they called up for the army. Most of the film is of these soldiers being turned from civilians into soldiers, which is quite good as some of it is quite amusing especially when they have to do the assault course. There is not much action in terms of battles within the film, the only one is towards the end of the film and although it is a well thought out battle scene it does not show the horror of war. The film however is easy to watch and there is always something going on. As far as acting goes all the actors suit their characters very well. David Niven could not be better chosen for the part of Lieutenant Perry who suits the role with his typically British accent but also of his commanding performance within certain scenes within the film. William Hartnell is also perfectly cast as the Sergeant who dominates the scenes which he in. Other actors who stand out for their roles are Stanley Holloway and Raymond Huntley. Peter Ustinov however might as well not have been in the film with the small role he had! Overall a very entertaining patriotic film which has a great array of characters and is very well cast.
