Buddies Thomas (Jackie Chan) and David (Yuen Biao) drive a high-tech lunch truck in Spain, where they get mixed up with a femme fatale and a novice detective (Sammo Hung), setting the stage for lightning-fast martial arts and wild car chases through the streets of Barcelona. At times reminiscent of the many THREE MUSKETEER films, WHEELS ON MEALS was one of the first films to star Chan, Yuen, and Hung, who were once part of the same Peking Opera troupe. Like the other films in which the three share screen time (PROJECT A, DRAGONS FOREVER), WHEELS showcases their athletic abilities, including Chan's surprising versatility on a skateboard. The film also features Keith Vitali, a former champion in American karate, and an exciting fight with Benny Urquidez, a champion kickboxer and the first American to defeat a Japanese man in karate on his home turf. In a luxury rarely afforded to Hong Kong directors, Hung was allowed to shoot on location in Barcelona, because the studio had faith in his track record. That faith was justified in the subsequent success of the film. WHEELS set a precedent for Chan, who has starred in many international films and has become a worldwide star. [More]
