Legendary movie about the war and the effect it has on people. Some of the talk in the movie are legendary and people use them in their conversations till this day. The cast is selected from people that live Mafia style of life in reality. Dusan Pekic (Pinki) dies two years after the movie because of that lifestyle.

Scorsese-inspired, smart, and fun.

this movie is ugly, reality is ugly, life is ugly.
not when you are a young promising criminal in a criminal country. this movie combines nostalgic feeling of once upon a time in america, narrative points of goodfellas and style of trainspotting. but the biggest problem are the characters. two of the protagonists are just plain anti-social degenerates, and the rest of the characters are somewhat comic reliefs. yet, the director fails to take an attitude towards two of them.

Pinki (Dusan Pekic) and Kraut (Milan Maric) are two young boys caught in the middle of turbulent political times in Serbia (between 1991 and 1997). Influenced by their neighbour, the flashy Dickie (Dragan Bjelogrlic), they turn to a life of crime, sex, and drugs.

Despite being a dark and fairly disturbing film, it contains enough humour to keep the audience laughing. One part that was particularly hilarious (with underlying disconcerting feeling) is when the boys convince Kraut's grandmother that a joint is an American cigarette and that the cocaine they are snorting is a remedy for stuffy noses. What follows is by far the most disturbing drug hallucination sequence I have ever seen (and I've watched Requiem for a Dream!).

But I think one of the best things about this movie is the way Dragojevic managed to bring to life conditions in Serbia. I think that Western audiences have trouble understanding the Serbian mentality, especially after some recent atrocities. But this film serves well to detail life in Serbia leading up to the Milosevic incidents.

All in all, this was a very good film. The plot was interesting, the humour was good, the acting was superb, the characters were believable, etc... Really, the only issue I had was the disturbing mental degeneration of the two main characters. But the very fact that I was, indeed, disturbed is tribute to good film-making. Just to add spice to the dish, this film had some of the best wound special effects I have ever seen.

Let me preface my comments by saying that the film is an EXCELLENT one, very realistic and believable. The actors were well chosen, the make-up and staging are flawless. The translations are satisfactory. The movie really has a soul of its own. Dusan Pekic is excellent?words fail to describe the quality of his performance.

But I was shocked by it. There is a LOT of sex, nudity (including male frontal), drug usage, and violence. Much of it is artistic in nature, and therefore forgivable. However, all of this makes it so that I can?t enjoy the movie. It just makes me feel bad.

I can recommend the film to people who are familiar with post-war Serbia, or at least have some vested interest in the Yugoslav conflict in the early nineties. Knowledge of the Serbian language is very helpful, as something always lost in translation. For the casual American (or world, for that matter) viewer, the film would simply not mean as much.

So, for the world audience, I would have to recommend something else (?No Man?s Land,? for instance)?this movie really isn?t for you?it might give you a bad idea that Serbian films are all dark and illicit. For those of you familiar with Serbia and/or Serbian cinematography, this is a must.

An ugly movie about two kids who live in Serbia and get into a world of crime. It is like a poor-mans Tarantino film.
