David M @Channel019 10/20/2024 Incredible! Great action, so funny and so eighties! Must see! See more Darren D @DarrenJD 02/22/2024 "Yes, Madam!" supplies you with everything that made Hong Kong action movies so popular. Twist & turns, wince-inducing stunts, great action set pieces & the goofy playfulness that always seems to work in their movies. As for the leads, Cynthia Rothrock & Michelle Yeoh continue to show why they'll always be legends in the action genre with their fighting skills. See more Matthew D @OceanSage 08/18/2023 Michelle Yeoh is awesome in her early career star-making vehicle! Chinese director Corey Yuen's martial arts crime comedy Yes, Madam! (1985) is a real riot. Trailblazing action and hysterical characters delivering hilarious joke after joke. The crime story is really interesting on its own merits. I was surprised that it consists of tons of jokes instead of being action heavy. Michelle Yeoh is insanely pretty and cool throughout Yes, Madam! Her slick black short hair is super cute and her playful personality shines through besides her amazing action skills. Yeoh is incomparable as an action heroine. Yeoh's Senior Inspector Ng is very cool. Cynthia Rothrock's Senior Inspector Carrie Morris keeps the pace and is a fun foil. She does so much police brutality. Makeup artist Tsui Bo-lung did a great job on Yeoh's cute blush and hairstyle. Costume designer Kenneth Yee's 80's outfits are very colorful and fun for how loose they are on everyone. I'm so glad that producers Sammo Hung and Dickson Poon got this old martial arts classic made. Writers Barry Wong and James Clouse created a cool narrative of a Hong Kong detective on a case about two thieves who unwittingly rob a corpse of an important microfilm right after he's been assassinated by The Triad. The absurdist jokes are hilarious and the crime story is riveting with plenty of mystery, reveals, and character moments. Michelle Yeoh gets to be a tough, but fair cop that is very persistent and intelligent. The idiotic thieves and the passport forger are as funny as Michelle Yeoh's clever humor. Editor Peter Cheung's super fast cutting keeps Yes, Madam at a brisk pace for 93 short minutes. Whether it's swift talking or kicks, Cheung's cuts show all the action that's easy to follow. Cinematographer Bill Wong Chung-Piu's beautiful wide shots and lovely close-up shots of the gorgeous actresses in high speed pursuit and intense combat is awesome. I love seeing 80's Hong Kong. Art directors Wong Kam-Kong and Eddie Mok Kwan-Kit use beautiful lighting and slick views for Hong Kong at night in particular. Set decorator Raymond Lee King-Man stuffs the house sets full of furniture and props to make each place look more realistic. John Shum's Strepsil, Mang Hoi's Asprin, and Tsui Hark's Panadol are hilarious comedy relief characters. Their thieves are so stupid that it's unbelievable. They have so much charisma. I love the bit where they say they'll jump into a toilet and flush themselves. Sammo Hung's Sifu, Richard Ng's Weak Heart, and David Chiang's Sifu's roommate are all a scream in their cameo. Wu Ma's irritated policeman and Billy Lau's parking inspector arguing over who gets to write a parking ticket is one of the funniest bits I've seen in awhile. Director Corey Yuen gets a little cameo as one of the policemen. Stunt choreographers and actors Corey Yuen, Mang Hoi Blackie, Ko Shou-Liang, Marc Mercury, Chin Ka-Lok, Hou Hsiao, Paul Wong Kwan, and Dare Devils Stunt Unlimited all do outstanding work throughout Yes, Madam! Composer Romeo Díaz' fierce sonic assault gives the action a real intensity. His moody synth lines give Yes, Madam! a cool atmosphere. I adore the main synth theme song that repeats during key moments. I really appreciated the film score. Sound designer Ng Kwok-Wah makes the hits sound hard, but the speaking voices are way too loud, if I had to criticize something. In conclusion, Yes, Madam! holds up as a hilarious comedy and exciting martial arts picture that gives Michelle Yeoh her first excellent leading lady role before Royal Warriors or Magnificent Warriors.
