Movie Info

From an inauspicious beginning performing comedy routines in the back of a burger joint in New York, unorthodox stand-up star Zach Galifianakis has made a splash on the scene with his inimitable brand of humor. In this live show filmed at San Francisco's Purple Onion nightclub, the versatile funnyman (whose credits include "Late World with Zach," Out Cold, Heartbreakers and The Comedians of Comedy) serves up a healthy dose of his signature wit.

Short and sweet, it's also intelligent and a welcome departure from the typical material found in the genre's bigger stars.

Audience Reviews for Zach Galifianakis: Live at the Purple Onion

A hilarious unconventional stand-up that shows not all comedians are as shitty as Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia.

A stand-up-special-turned-indie-picture, "Live At The Purple Onion" nevertheless showcases comedy superstar Zach Galifianakis at his idiosyncratic best. He's been accused by many of being more of an Andy Kauffman tribute act than anything else, but make no mistake about it: Galifianakis has individuality to spare. Clocking in at just over an hour, the film flip-flops between segments of his stand-up routine (taped at the titular California club) and several behind-the-scenes type segments with the intention of giving the viewer a look into his life and, more importantly, into his process of being one of America's premier comedy talents. Some of the funniest stuff comes from Brian Unger interviewing Galifianakis' "brother" Seth (just the comedian sans beard), who talks, among other things, about their shared love of the Fugees. It's breezy, fun, and, yes, very funny. It's on Netflix, so I recommend devoting a spare hour somewhere in your schedule to this indelible slice of comedy.
