In the late 1960s and 1970s, fear grips the city of San Francisco as a serial killer called Zodiac stalks its residents. Investigators (Mark Ruffalo, Anthony Edwards) and reporters (Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr.) become obsessed with learning the killer's identity and bringing him to justice. Meanwhile, Zodiac claims victim after victim and taunts the authorities with cryptic messages, cyphers and menacing phone calls.

Zodiac is one of David Fincher's most unsettling films because it treats uncertainty as the real source of horror. The story is not driven by constant shocks, but by the slow realization that truth may remain permanently out of reach. The film follows journalists, detectives and ordinary people drawn into a case that gradually consumes their lives. Jake Gyllenhaal gives Robert Graysmith a quiet, obsessive intensity, while Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. bring fatigue, wit and vulnerability to a world shaped by pressure and doubt. What makes Zodiac endure is its refusal to offer easy catharsis. Violence appears suddenly, but the lasting terror comes from fragments of evidence, missed connections and the way obsession can damage those searching for answers. It is a crime film about the cost of never knowing.

A long film with no thrills. It just painstakingly retells the the story of the reporters and police, with no hint of a climax. The shots are good, the actors are good, but you just sit there watching nothing happen.

During the 70s, police and journalists are confounded by a man who claims to be Zodiac and responsible for the murders of several persons. This film is more of a time capsule than a mystery. It follows a straightforward narrative, attempting to portray the investigations accurately. Fincher does a great job immersing us into the time with smoke filled rooms, frantic news rooms, and the tactile presence of documents one must sift thru to find nuggets of information. about the physics of the search and the material cost of seeking a truth that remains out of reach. Oddly, however, the realism of the film also makes it emotionally distant and the audience is captured more by the fact these are true events being portrayed. John Carroll Lynch (Fargo) excels in portraying one of the major suspects.
