James Purefoy ("Rome," "The Following"), Michael Kenneth Williams ("The Wire," "Boardwalk Empire") and Christina Hendricks ("Mad Men") star in a six-hour adaptation of novels by Joe R. Lansdale. Down on his luck after losing his job, '60s activist/ex-con Hap Collins can't help but listen when his seductive former wife Trudy -- for whom he still pines -- resurfaces with promises of finding a sunken treasure in the Deep South. Joining the adventure is Hap's unlikely buddy Leonard Pine, an openly gay black Vietnam War vet with a bad temper and little use for Trudy's feminine wiles. Soon enough the simple get-rich-quick scheme snowballs into bloody mayhem.

While the plot could be more concise, Hap and Leonard benefits from engaging characters and an absorbing, offbeat atmosphere.

The actors are charismatic enough to compensate for the self-consciousness. Go to Full Review

The first three episodes of "Hap and Leonard" sucked me in almost as easily as Trudy pulls Hap. Go to Full Review

It doesn't just simulate humor like so many crime dramas before it; it's actually fun. Go to Full Review

The rich setting, skilled cast, and A Simple Plan-like setup seems ripe for the kind of baroque development the fans of serial TV demand. Go to Full Review

It's violence, adventures, friendship, dark humor. A curious combination that works and that has the crime novel as center. [Full Review in Spanish] Go to Full Review

Andrei D 08/31/2024 The stakes feel to low and the violence doesn't scale with the rest of the interactions See more 06/09/2022 The show overall can't figure what it wants to be or what message it's trying convey. It isn't confident in its off beat moments, and the timing between serious moments and quirky is jarring. It veers from the timid off beat moments into silly over the top bits which are unnecessary and throws off the flow. The constant use of the n-word is apparently supposed to make us understand how cool Hap and Leonard are with each other, but ends up leaving the impression that it's actually the writers who desperately want the viewers to believe they are really really cool. And can Hollywood please stop with the tired "Southern Vixen" stereotype? Did some Hollywood producers travel to a Southern state and somehow believe that being polite and friendly was flirting? Someone explain this to me. See more 04/07/2022 Mindless entertainment. Ridiculous plot and pointless scenarios. Cartoonish at best. See more Shawn C @WickedXian 01/19/2022 How did this AMAZING show slip by me. Top notch acting and writing. The story just sucks you into it's world as the characters show more and more depth. It is not afraid to be raw, and surprisingly good at delivering it. I can't wait to start Season 2. See more 12/23/2021 I am so tired of black people being cast as angry, rude and hypocritical. Williams in this Makes it unwatchable. He freely uses terms such as pekerwood against his white companion. He also demands tolerance as he is gay but then he's totally intolerant and Hateful towards an overweight guy and a guy who chooses to dress up behave like an old hippie. He is a total hypocrite and very irritating. Frankly he is a dkhead. I do not believe all the positive reviews this thing gets. See more Joseph P 07/11/2021 There is nothing like it on TV! Uniquely different and immensely entraining See more Read all reviews
