While it still feels like it's finding its legs, the second season of Hell on Wheels is more confident than the first and perfectly acceptable for those in need of a Western fix.

Critic Reviews for Hell on Wheels: Season 2
While it may not feature Johnny Depp clowning around Jack Sparrow style, Hell on Wheels is a lot more entertaining.
A measure of how absorbing Hell on Wheels is that each of the characters has evolved into someone we know and, in varying degrees, root for.
Hell on Wheels seems to be puttering around a circular track, with no straightway in sight.
Hell on Wheels is a perfectly adequate piece of television with above adequate production values.
Dramatically, the show feels as stalled as the trains, which have nowhere to go.
The drama feels dry, predictable and sluggish.
The cast is good, while the Old West still feels especially beautiful and perilous.
Hell on Wheels has intermingled its characters more than in season one - the main characters actually interact with one another.
It's a solid, meat-and-potatoes example of a genre (Westerns) I've always had a soft spot for - no more, and no less.
It's still welcome to tell its pulpy Southern revenge story, which can certainly offer a certain amount of goofy fun, but for any of the other characters to have much point, the show needs to do more.
The show is becoming much stronger than its first season ever hinted it would be.
Everything feels like it's more or less a continuation of the first season with a little extra spice.
