AMC's goal for "Into the Badlands" was twofold: produce a compelling character drama, and introduce the highest caliber of martial arts filmmaking to a weekly, ongoing series. Left in the hands of creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar ("Shanghai Noon," "Smallville"), the series stars Daniel Wu as ruthless, prodigiously skilled warrior Sunny, who mentors teenage boy M.K. during a spiritual journey across a feudal civilization known as the Badlands. With the help of trained assassins like Sunny, the area is ruled by rival barons, and for decades Quinn has consistently outflanked and outmaneuvered his fellow barons to keep the upper hand. His invincibility, however, begins to fade in light of brazen attacks by the newest baron, The Widow, who believes M.K. is the key to her success. As the battle for control of the Badlands heats up, the destinies of the stoic assassin and the impetuous teenager become intertwined.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Into the Badlands is loaded with off-kilter potential that's left largely unfulfilled -- although its well-choreographed action sequences should satisfy martial arts fans.

"Never judge a show by its pilot," is a motto I try to live by, and Into the Badlands is the perfect example of why this is a good way to live. Go to Full Review

Despite some of its larger flaws, Into the Badlands seems worth pursuing - if just for Wu and the strength of the show's choreography. Go to Full Review

Each one is a dizzying, dazzling blend of athletic dexterity and visual poetry, and they get more insanely intricate as the show goes on. Go to Full Review

The diversity is up front and in your face, and I couldn't appreciate it more. But oddly, that diversity evaporates among its female characters. Go to Full Review

Into the Badlands finally drums up some emotional intensity that matches its milestone-setting, on-screen martial arts in the best episode of the season so far. Go to Full Review

In the grand tradition of the Shaw Brothers, Quentin Tarantino, and The Raid, Into the Badlands prioritizes the fights. If you can keep up with the bizarre plotting, it'll only ramp up in episode two. Yes, it gets gnarlier. Go to Full Review

Russell A @Rallen117 Jul 31 I will say I’m surprised it has such high ratings although it is weirdly addictive. First off the writing is beyond bad sometimes. Like Tilda is a regent and the best fighter for her baron but get destroyed by a no name colt just so MK can use his power to save her. That made zero sense. There’s a hundred situations like that, that make absolutely no sense just so the story can progress but it’s just really bad writing. I do enjoy most of the show but I feel the people giving it five stars are on the lower IQ side. MK’s voice is super annoying too. Pros it has some great fight scenes and a few of the characters are really likable. See more Slick R @SlickReviewer 08/26/2024 People out here don't realize just how elite the fight choreography is on this show. Especially with the swords. The only other show that rivals Into The Badlands with the fighting choreo was "Warrior" which was originally on Cinemax, then moved to HBO. All these reviewers rating it so low would rather watch their lame Star Wars series with the worst fighting ever. It's like Disney refused to hire the best sword/light saber choreographers for their $500 million budget series. And yes, I am saying that Into The Badlands fight scenes blow away any fight sequences in any Star Wars movie or series, and even better than big budget franchises like John Wick and Jason Statham movies. It's rare that you get a show where almost every actor on the show fights at an elite level, or at least the camera angles make it seem that way... Regarding the story line it's a little cheesy, but the fighting more than makes up for it IMO. See more Antoniofranco D @Antoniofranco 08/06/2023 A very cheap production, with no original ideas, bad acting, and over the top action sequences See more Enlightened D 07/19/2023 First season was awesome! Then the second season went off the rails. See more Johnathon W @Hoppynsc 06/15/2023 Fun first season that sets up the universe, even if it doesn't quite jell. The cast is solid across the board, with Daniel Wu compelling as the lead, Sunny, while Emily Bechem is sophisticated and deadly as the Widow, who is more than she seems. Behind the camera, the show runners crafts a fun world, with plenty of intrigue and fantastic fight scenes (a highlight of the show). However, not everything quite works, especially how you can have a society that has gas powered vehicles and electricity but no gunpowder (basically, it seems more like an excuse of the show's aesthetic). Overall, a fun watch and worth checking out on Netflix. See more nicky t 10/22/2022 Action, gore, great visuals, and story....I wish they would make a season 4! See more Read all reviews
