Many people are familiar with classic literary characters like Dr. Frankenstein and Dorian Gray. "Penny Dreadful" brings those and other characters into a new light by exploring their origin stories in this psychological thriller that takes place in the dark corners of Victorian London. Sir Malcolm is an explorer who has lost his daughter to the city's creatures, and he will do whatever is needed to get her back and to right past wrongs. His accomplice, seductive clairvoyant Vanessa Ives, recruits charming American Ethan Chandler to help locate Sir Malcolm's daughter and slay some monsters. Oscar-winner Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") is one of the series' executive producers.

There was no skimping on horror, or on glittering performances. Go to Full Review

The second season's first two episodes have laid aside any doubt in my mind of a sophomore slump for this show. If anything, the return from hiatus has shifted "Penny Dreadful" into even higher gear. Go to Full Review

Penny Dreadful is dealing with century-old characters that have never left our nightmares, playing with our expectations and allowing us to rediscover the reasons these monsters are so transcendent. Go to Full Review

Penny Dreadful's ambition doesn't come from its ingenuity, but from its attempts to ground the most ridiculous gothic stories with grounded emotional resonance. Go to Full Review

Khaztiel Delbod D @khaztielddenver_ Oct 31 Esta segunda parte me gustó mas que la anterior, gran manera de desarrollar a sus personajes. See more Lesterberne T @RT17560862 02/29/2024 I'm 2 episodes in and this is not it. The relationships between characters DID NOT develop naturally. The season 1 finale was rushed and the emotions were still raw. In season 2, they act as if they were always this close, this vulnerable with one another. It's a huge shift of direction when it comes to interactions. It's very very off putting. There is no intriguing mystery right now. It's pretty boring on top of the nonsense relationship shift. The only good thing about this season so far is that there are x1000 more overview shots and settings shots to let you know how the area looks and where characters are. It was something missing in season 1 that I only realized upon watching season 2. See more Claudiu I @Clausion 08/03/2023 Maybe just a tiny bit less art in this season, but for sure more intensity in drama. Very good acting in general, but Eva Green and Timothy Dalton were amazing. Combining werewolf with witches, vampires with Frankenstein and Dorian Gray it should sound like a receipt for disaster, a risk for kitsch, but somehow the writers did it right and the result is an interesting show. See more Rogue 5 @RT17098361 08/02/2023 100% the best season in this show I loved this one. See more Toms c @tomscove 06/11/2023 Awesome and gothic. There's a real energy to this programme, I can see how it might be a little slow for some but for those, who like me like a slow burn, the pay off is huge. See more dean m @RT20156263 12/30/2022 Was looking forward to this very much so, but never thought for second that series two could be as good as series one. But i was proven wrong. They have stepped up their game even more so. This series really ticks all the boxes for me See more Read all reviews
