This historical drama explores the fight for an independent Texas that occurred following the conclusion of the Battle of the Alamo. Gen. Sam Houston leads a ragtag group of Texas Rangers into battle against Mexican Gen. Santa Anna. Houston and the Rangers fight seemingly insurmountable odds to overtake the opponent and gain independence. The series comes from the same team behind Emmy-winning miniseries "Hatfields & McCoys" and, like that program, features Emmy nominee Bill Paxton, who plays Houston, in a prominent role.

Critics Consensus

Tedious and forgettable, Texas Rising is full of offensive stereotypes and a messy multitude of unfocused characters and narratives.

It is perhaps to North & South what The Vikings is to Game of Thrones, not dissimilar, but starker, simpler and perhaps a little more instinctively brutal. Go to Full Review
Brian Moylan Guardian 05/26/2015
The cardinal sin of Texas Rising is that it is just dreadfully boring. There is a whole lot of talking but next to no doing. A handful of conflicts are over too soon and too small in scope for an epic production such as this. Go to Full Review
Mary McNamara Los Angeles Times 05/26/2015
[The cast] may not be enough to raise the entirety of Texas, but they along with rich historical details that go well beyond the usual Alamo myths make the series worth watching. Go to Full Review
Rob Lowman Los Angeles Daily News 05/29/2015
Texas Rising offers a multistory sprawl, with perhaps a few moments of entertainment, but more often with stilted dialogue, and it is undecided, or worse, defensive, about the history. Go to Full Review

In the end, this messy Texas tale will likely prompt viewers to forget about watching long before the Alamo is avenged. Go to Full Review

T M @RT88944204 10/23/2024 Lonesome Dove it is not but it is far more violent and I’m sure far more realistic! Ray Liotta is borderline psychotic and there are good performances by Bill Paxton, Brendan Fraser and Jeffery Dean Morgan . One thing that is odd is the episodes. Both Rotten Tomatoes and IMBD show 5 I can assure you it’s 10. See more Mike @RT63555176 08/20/2023 Incredibly offensive and completely historically inaccurate. Slavers fought Mexico while living in Mexico over their right to own slaves after breaking the law for years. This directly led to the civil war. Not one single mention of this fact. Absolutely disgraceful, hateful, racist propaganda. See more tovangar T @RT10995558 05/23/2023 So boring it makes one's eyes water. A load of people wandering around in costume not engaged at all. No discernable direction. The plug should have been pulled on this after day one. See more 03/17/2022 Great series about the aftermath of the fall of the alamo features events like the masacre ar goliad. Perfectly depics the lack of honor the mexican army had. Dont listen to the idiotic critics they are all wrong. See more Read all reviews
