From executive producer Chris Moore ("Good Will Hunting," "American Pie") comes an experimental documentary series that turns the process of filmmaking into a competition. Shane Dawson and Anna Martemucci make their feature-film debut directing separate movies of a single play. With identical budgets, the pair individually shape their visions. Independent filmmaker Martemucci hires her husband and brother-in-law to help rewrite the script. Dawson, a popular comic on YouTube, prefers a style with raunchy humor. The series charts their progress to the theatrical releases, then viewer votes determine which one wins $250,000. Moore, actor Zachary Quinto ("American Horror Story") and producer Josh Shader ("My Best Friend's Girl") are among the directors' mentors.

The Chair is a fun, bingeable workplace dramedy. But that it’s being hailed as satire says more about the overlapping class politics of the media and tenured faculty as culture industry workers than about its “biting” politics. Go to Full Review

The Chair doesn't make filmmaking look fun to actually do (aspiring movie moguls may disagree), but it's a lot of fun to watch. Go to Full Review

The unscripted series is surprisingly engrossing and probably more valuable than two years of film school for would-be auteurs. Go to Full Review
