Wanted to join the Merchant Navy, but was not able to due to his poor eyesight. Served as a radar technician in the Corps of Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers during World War ll, reaching the rank of Sergeant. Began acting at the Manchester Repertory Theatre in 1945. Appeared in the original West End production of Pal Joey in 1954. Became a household name as Leonard Swindley in Coronation Street, a role he played until 1966 while continuing film work. Suffered a stroke in his dressing room before a performance of Home at Seven at the Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham. In 2010, a statue of him, as Captain Mainwaring from Dad's Army, was unveiled in Norfolk. His success as Captain Mainwaring resulted in considerable television and theatrical work, which compromised his health. His acting career spanned nearly forty years and included lead roles in many theatre and television productions. Was nominated for seven BAFTAs and became one of the most recognised faces on television.
