Public Enemies Reviews

Compelling to watch in the way only Michael Mann can direct, but unfortunately, there just isn't much meat to the script. Depp and Bale are excellent, and the charisma between Depp and Marion Cotillard is strong, but she is always fantastic. Ultimately, staying somewhat true to the Dillinger history, leaves the story lacking... and maybe that is the point. There was no great thematic tale to be told... a charming, hyper violent criminal is ultimately killed by brutal, hyper violent law officers. There is a bleakness to it all that is belied by the suprising warmth of the cinematography. Not Mann's best film by far, but not bad.

Impressive cast doing good work; surprisingly restrained Christian Bale allows Johnny Depp to do good work in the flashier role; Cotillard shines as usual

An ambitious, intriguing, competent, stylish and technically impressive gangster epic with great performances from Johnny Depp and Christian Bale. However, its narrative isn't compelling enough to be a successful and satisfying drama.

Not the best Micheal Mann has to offer but not his worst either.

Great job on the time period piece, but, ultimately it doesn't leave you caring about the characters in this true story of John Dillinger

This film is propped up by great direction and great performances (Johnny Depp doesn't disappoint) and an interesting story.

Despite its preference for recreating the events of the film on-location and a notable dedication to quality set design, Public Enemies still feels like it needs to rely on the audience's inherent knowledge of the period to complete the atmosphere of the setting, and often deviates from historical fact drastically. There are still some great parts to this film, especially the energetic cinematography and great gunplay (a longtime strength of Mann). One entirely unexpected and fun aspect of the film is recognizing where else you might have seen the steady stream of charater actors and bit parts throughout the film, with recognizable names sprinkled in a range of roles that have appearances of just a couple of minutes each. (3.5/5)

it feels like it is enamored with a bunch of psychopaths. The focus is all off and the film is deeply unpleasant.

Gangsters with charismatic and charming performances, as it lacks true drama and narrative. Besides the fact it is based mostly on the true events of Johnny Depp‘s lead character. The plot and writing is at point and does add a little to enjoy with the lackluster drama with some hints of action!
