Though this series lacks the authority that comes with being a heavily documented “true story”, this is still a romp. Go to Full Review

The wash of creative licence and composite characters dulls the edge of this second instalment of The Gold, which might have been better off just focusing on the rise and fall of Palmer and Noye. Go to Full Review

For the most part, it is focused and newly thrilling. And despite having no obvious ending to draw from in real life, The Gold manages to cobble one together, with gusto. Go to Full Review

The second and final series follows the other half of the money on an international trail that takes in the Canary Islands, the Caribbean and the Isle of Man, and it’s just as remarkable and off-kilter a watch. Go to Full Review

Behind every great fortune is a great crime, and behind that a tasty crime drama, as long as it’s written by Neil Forsyth. Go to Full Review

Andrei D @RT74856639 Jan 27 It loses some energy and goes a little too wide with the investigations but it uses its time well and extracts some solid performances See more Flixster F @RT77094268 Dec 20 Not as great as the first part but watchable. "It's Brink's-Mat. It's never over." See more Edward L @Glyndower Aug 20 While the first season was essentially a drama-doc this is just an extended version of 'The Sweeney' with most of the action fictionalised and this weakens its impact. The casting is as good as with Season 1 with Joshua McGuire making a fair attempt at impersonating Tom Hollander who presumably was not available to take the role of Baxter. See more Ken D @KDLondon Jul 5 S2 continued with the weakness in the character arcs of the protagonists in S1, plus an increasing dislike of every scene Boyce appears in due to the character's arrogance, unlike the real-life Boyce. All other protagonists and antagonists were played with conviction, except for the lack of flaws in the protagonists. Despite the bravdo of the Boyce character, he never recovered most of the gold and only half of the money. This must go down as the most expensive police failure in history. Unfortunately, the series makes no mention of this. And don't just take my word for it… "It was an absolute shambles, far too much dramatic licence and the real story was so much better," said the ex-detective, whose job had been to follow the trail of the 6,800 gold bars to the US and the Caribbean. See more John W @Bambam67890 Jun 23 A really good story and well acted. Factually however it was wide of the mark from the books I have read on brinks mat. Noye was never in need of money and lived in luxury in Spain. He wasn’t alone and was arrested in a plush restaurant while with his Spanish girlfriend. Palmer didn’t have to pay £33m, served less than 5 years and both had large properties and money on their release. No gold was ever recovered and little money was confiscated by the police plus 4 of the 6 robbers were never arrested. Making this out to be a triumph by the police who cracked the case isn’t correct. Saying it’s based on true events is the link to the robbery. Much of the rest in relation to the characters and their lives is fiction. Still well worth a watch however. See more Bernard M @RT23286849 Jun 20 The two seasons of The Gold form an exceptional story. Very well written, acted and directed with not a dull minute over the two six episode seasons. Highly recommended. See more Read all reviews
