Movie Info

Broke and without work, newspaper reporter Eddie Willis (Humphrey Bogart) agrees to work for the corrupt boxing promoter Nick Benko (Rod Steiger) to help hype his new boxer, Toro Moreno (Mike Lane). While Toro is beastly in appearance, he has no actual boxing talent, and all his fights are fixed. When Toro gets a shot at the title against the brutal Buddy Brannen (Max Baer), Willis is faced with the tough decision of whether or not to tell Toro that his entire career is a sham.

bogie is great in his last film role as a reporter turned press agent in this fine boxing expose, a thinly veiled account of the career of mob boxer primo carnera who tried unsuccessfully to sue the producers. bogie was sick and some of his dialogue had to be dubbed but u can't even tell

Bogart's last film has many flaws, but his performance is so great, it makes this a memorable film.

Bogie goes out with a bang! He was dying of cancer while making this film and his intensity never wanes. Very enjoyable film about a gambler(Steiger) and a down and out sports writer (Bogie) hyping a bum of a boxer all the way to the title. The boxing scenes are not very convincing, but the acting and story makes you not care. Bogie is good as always, but this film belongs to Steiger. Steiger has become one of my favorite character actors in recent years and he is in top form in this film. If you like Hump and Rod then this is a must see!

    Worth watching for Bogart alone.
