Lock Up maybe a little too cliched and heavy-handed to mark itself as a classic of the prison drama sub-genre, but as a piece of 80's action drama, it has its pleasures.

The summer of 1989 was the summer of Batman, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, Lethal Weapon 2 and several other sizable hits, so who in their right mind wanted to waste time and money on a generic Stallone prison flick?

has more in common with the litany of weak films from the 90s than with his powerful flicks

Director John Flynn keeps it all in check and creates a believable prison community, but the screenplay insists on clich and idiocy to get by.

Vicious, violent story set in corrupt prison, starring Stallone and Sutherland.

Not a bad prison movie until Stallone turns into a one-man army during a really ludicrous climax.

Sep 11, 2018My roommate and I were on a Stallone kick recently, but we never got around to watching Lock Up because we were looking for some hard (see: over-the-top) action, and this sounded more like a wistful drama. Eventually though, Lock Up came due, and I... actually kind of loved it? It's about as cheesy I had feared, but I what never occurred to me is that that cheese would totally work. I mean, it's not exactly Shawshank we're working with here, but if I were putting together a list of all the good prison movies ever made, Lock Up would be on it.Gimly M Super Reviewer

Jun 18, 2010If you ever wondered what Shawshank Redemption wouldâve been like in the 80s, this is exactly it. Sylvester Stallone always delivers the action and heart, always making his movies watchable and admirable. This isnât overly intelligent or complex, but it wasnât meant to. Itâs a simple story of a man wrongfully convicted and constantly tested, you just canât avoid feeling compassion for him. Itâs extremely goofy at times and almost ridiculous, but any Sly fan will find themselves happy.Conner R Super Reviewer

Nov 23, 2009Sylvester Stallone gives one of the greatest performances of his career, showing he is not an action hero but an actor and what a hell of an unforgettable performance. Donald Sutherland is brilliant, giving an intense and great peroformance. A powerful and excellent film. It's moving, thrilling, stunning and truly exhilerating. A riveting prison drama that is truly remarkable and outstanding.Al S Super Reviewer
