  • The backgrounds are beautifully drawn. There are sunny days in the French Quarter, spooky nights among live oaks hung with Spanish moss, and a rousing denouement at the Mardi Gras.

  • If the film boasts any advantages over digital, it's in the pastel richness of its colours and the elasticity of its characters, who enjoy a degree of comic flexibility and range of expressions we still don't get from computers.

  • The nineteen-twenties jazz-age setting and the primal-adventure storytelling are boilerplate Disney, scrubbed clean of any real local color.

  • It's a very cute film, a very accessible work for children and families.

  • Randy Newman's songs are a little too blandly Randy Newman-ish and the story is uneven, but there are some great characters, some even better jokes, a general sense of good humour and that entrancing, eye-ravishing old-school animation.

This has all the marks of the classic Disney period, but it never reaches those ambitious heights. The film has a great vocal cast and they manage to bring their characters to life, but it's the overall storyline that's slightly flat. Disney throw a decent sized budget at this film, and if it wasn't for the box office clout of Avatar, it might have faired better at the box office. If you had to measure this film vs the existing library, I would have this around the middle. It's not a bad film, but it's not a classic. It's a shame this classic animated film wasn't more successful. 15/03/2020

I have some questions, I have some comments, both of which may come across as moderately hostile, but I still enjoyed The Princess and the Frog. I'm not too sure why though. I won't be coming back for the soundtrack, which is generally one of the biggest appeals of these Princess deals, and certain things are so *yawn* Disney that you can call them before you press play, but at least it's a little different.

Disney romp in the same manner as the old classics, yet lacking bygone excitement despite some interesting tunes.

It was an alright Disney movie with some decent morals. Meh. Some decent music, though!
