The 2019 nominees for Best Animated Short display plenty of talent but (with one exception) tell very similar stories of familial love and time-passing melancholy.
Pixar's longtime domination of the animation world takes its toll, as generational rifts and/or personal neuroses are what gets treated here.
Still, even when these variations on a theme are slight, some raw filmmaking power still emerges.
This year's Oscar-nominated shorts carry plenty of emotional weight in their compact running times with stories that span life's breadth.
Several of these efforts are able to focus on children's emotional lives without turning them into opportunistic plot devices.
The future may look grim in these four shorts, but at least the next generation will have some great actors. All of the children in these shorts are excellent.
My pick: The animated short of the year surely must be Domee Shi's 'Bao,' a bittersweet reverie on motherhood that features one of the most hilariously shocking moments onscreen this year.
A relatively strong set of nominees that, while high on themes of melancholy and familial displacement, are able to capture their resounding sentiments quite well.
In the wake of the president's State of the Union address, I thought it opportune to deliver my State of the Oscar Shorts for 2019. And, sad to report, they are anything but strong.
Well worth seeing for the artistic prowess it showcases.
The five animated shorts up for the Academy Award this year are notable for their representation both on and off screen.
What makes this crop of shorts interesting, but ultimately somewhat tedious, is their thematic similarities.
