See more Teddy B @RT90521672 Jan 27 It does, at times, feel like a B-grade 'Rebecca' in its pseudo-Gothic atmosphere and what appears to be the build-up of the mental deterioration of the female character before another plot is revealed, but George Cukor's tight direction and personality over 'Gaslight' makes it a solid success. Ingrid Bergman's character is written to be a great deal too stupid and wishy-washy even for her time, which is my main problem, but she manages to make it work within a story that you can tell definitely began on the stage. A flawless cast led by Ingrid Bergman and Charles Boyer in a convincing romantic tragedy, rooted in a mysteriously haunting compulsion that is brilliantly resolved in the end. Bergman's acting is seamless and genuine, subtle and deep, and everything around her fascinating. The story is well-concocted - (much improved from the 1940 version four years earlier, though that version has a few interesting quirks - MGM's 1944 version here is vastly superior) and the through line knits all things together to a satisfying and interesting ending.
