Moonstruck

Critics Consensus

Led by energetic performances from Nicolas Cage and Cher, Moonstruck is an exuberantly funny tribute to love and one of the decade's most appealing comedies.

No sooner does Italian-American widow Loretta (Cher) accept a marriage proposal from her doltish boyfriend, Johnny (Danny Aiello), than she finds herself falling for his younger brother, Ronny (Nicolas Cage). She tries to resist, but Ronny lost his hand in an accident he blames on his brother, and has no scruples about aggressively pursuing her while Johnny is out of the country. As Loretta falls deeper in love, she comes to learn that she's not the only one in her family with a secret romance.

  • Here, at last, is the kind of warm adult comedy that often eludes Hollywood an offbeat exploration of family, fidelity and the foibles of the human heart.

  • An American movie with foreign-film sensibilities, Moonstruck's depths come from their perfect balance of writing and direction.

  • It isn't great art -- it`s too closely concentrated on immediate emotional effect for that -- but it is highly sophisticated craftsmanship.

  • There's an old-fashioned romanticism about the picture, a sweet, gentle approach to love and family life. But this is kept from seeming sappy by the picture's tough-minded, almost abrasive sense of humor.

Nicholas Cage is completely miscast as Ronny and his chemistry with Cher is nonexistent, while the movie's script doesn't have that much substance to match its charm and generally effective sense of humor; even so, this romantic comedy makes for an amusing pastime.

You could be fooled to think this would be a simplistic romantic comedy but it is so much more. Cher should have stuck to acting as she shines in the lead role, one that might have fallen flat with any other actress. Nicolas Cage is in highly intense form and has a lot of fun with the love interest role, you forget he has maintained the same over the top acting from the beginning. The film won't play for everyone, my partner could not get invested with this and left early one. When you grow up with Woody Allen you can't help but enjoy a film like this. This is a film that has a funny script and a filmmaker with great depth at the helm. Jewison is one of the great dramatic filmmakers and you can see he was merely letting the script unfold, the end kitchen scene is something straight from a play. One of the great comedies that struck gold at the awards, and deservedly so. 09/11/2018.

Good movie about a realistic family, although I'm surprised that both Cher and Olympia Dukakis won Academy awards.

Although not a big fan of Cher on the big screen, Jewison makes the most of her and chronic overactor Nicolas Cage to make nice little romance movie. It has the perfect blend of comedy and mayhem without descending into a sitcom like effort.
