What to Know

Critics Consensus

Benefitting from astonishing Australian locations and Charlize Theron's raw athleticism while skimping on the finer details, Apex doesn't mark the zenith of survival thrillers but makes for a solid entry.

Charlize Theron gives everything she’s got to a survival thriller right out of the cliché spin cycle, but there’s no contest when she pits herself against a raging Mother Nature and Taron Egerton’s psycho cannibal killer. They never had a chance. Go to Full Review

It is thrillingly made -- lean and mean. Go to Full Review

This is a mildly distracting guilty pleasure romp that is undone by its own casting crisis. Go to Full Review
Steve Murray ArtsATL 6d
Director Baltasar Kormákur keeps things moving relentlessly through the jungle, ravines and whitewater rapids, the stars are believably well matched and Jeremy Robbins’ screenplay has a couple of nicely gruesome surprises. Go to Full Review

Egerton is clearly having a blast here. It’s fun to see him lean into another chaotic performance.Apex is an interesting title though, considering this film is only in the middle of the food chain of cinema. Go to Full Review

In its strongest passages, APEX becomes spatial. Crevasses, cliff faces, narrow passages — the geography tightens, and with it the tension. Go to Full Review

Patrick C @PatricktheCritic 1h For what it's worth, the premise is good but the execution is problematic. It honestly feels like half a movie, the other half is show casing the Blue mountains. As the film progresses situations "occur" to suit the narrative and thats where the film loses believability. Charlise is of course a strong actress, but overall, it's a miss. The villain is not inspiring and the film just feels like a checklist item for dear Charlise. See more Dantag T @RT46229154 8h Movie about nothing. Boring, no twist, lack of deepness, just cringe. Typical netflix crap. See more Noah H. @Noah85 11h Really annoying movie. It started off pretty suspenseful and gripping but the gory parts in the middle were so disturbing. I couldn’t even finish it. See more thomas M @RT67794504 13h Apex brings top notch cinematography to C tier script writing. The first half of the movie leaves you rooting against her, and the second half leaves you rooting for the movie to end tragically for both characters. The plot twist is quite good, but happens a little too early for it to throw a real spin. Great movie to drink to, don't attempt sober. See more atreu73 G @RT64249060 18h Not bad at all. Would like to see more of Eric Bana. See more Fahim Z @fhmzhr 1d Apex is a serviceable action thriller that relies on familiar genre beats to keep the viewer engaged. While it doesn't reinvent the wheel, it provides a straightforward, high-stakes hunt that works for an afternoon watch. The Highlights: The Action: The cat-and-mouse chase mechanics are executed with enough competence to keep the adrenaline level steady. The Concept: A classic "man as prey" premise, which is used effectively to build tension throughout the film. The Pacing: It moves quickly, avoiding unnecessary exposition and focusing on the core conflict. The Verdict: It is an average, middle-of-the-road action flick that is best enjoyed without overthinking the plot. If you want a simple, action-heavy experience with a clear goal, this fits the bill.
