From the overly-long static shots to the plot that goes nowhere to characters you simply don't empathize with or even hate, why this movie exists is beyond me. Emory Coehn does a job of portraying a pathetic loser, but there's nothing about the character that creates any real reaction. This is the type of film that will move you to both feel and think. Then cause you to ponder your role in the absurdity of life, all while taking you on an entertaining ride that causes you to laugh in the most unexpected moments—like the comedic timing of a cotton swab jar emptied or a full-on mental war waged with a Santa doll. The writing is brilliant and multi-layered, making it a film you can watch five times and still find something new you hadn't considered before. There's satire on fate with the two main characters embodying a juxtaposition of near apathy and "everything has a purpose." This is the kind of film you watch and know the writer/director thought deeply about every single detail with profound intention. Every color of every set, every ebb and flow of the soundtrack, every detail of a simple frozen yogurt logo. This isn't pure entertainment. "Big Gold Brick" is the perfect combination of art and entertainment, not taking itself too seriously while also maintaining elusivity only detectable to those who like their films to feel more like art. In other reviews he's often compared to veteran directors, but he's not a conglomerate of writers and directors piled into a film. He's Petsos. And someday that name will be used as a comparison when rookie filmmakers enter the scene. He's just original. The film is original.
