What to Know

Critics Consensus

Boychoir rests heavily -- and not always comfortably -- on the shoulders of Dustin Hoffman, whose typically excellent work isn't always quite enough to compensate for an overly predictable drama.

Manipulative and unabashedly sentimental, The Choir carries loud echoes of other better movies. Go to Full Review

The notes of this tune are tear-jerkingly familiar, and there's never any doubt about the final chorus, replete with a descant line of convenient illness and last-minute substitution. Go to Full Review

Sure, the plot points are in place - mother's alcoholism, mother's death, father's rejection - but the film spends all of 30 seconds on each arc, successfully draining Stet's story of any poignancy and passion. Go to Full Review

Director François Girard does a nice job of moving the plot from A to B but, like the beautiful music featured on the soundtrack, is a bit too harmonious, too conventional in the telling of the story. Go to Full Review

Despite some likeable moments and perhaps future iTunes success, too much of this film is mediocre and, despite all efforts, emotionally monotonal. Go to Full Review

Tony S @TOzzie 18h I enjoyed this a lot. Yes, it’s a story with themes often seen – a young child (boy in this case) with some family issues, in a boarding school (this one with an outstanding choir program), who goes through trials and tribulations and triumphs. As well, his family issues (father and mother issues) are resolved for a positive ending. The choir singing and music are outstanding, including "greatest hits" excerpts from works like Handel Messiah,, and performances in locations like New York St. Patrick’s Cathedral. Very enjoyable classical choral performances And I always enjoy watching Dustin Hoffman, Kathy Bates, Eddie Izard, etc. A big plus - It’s a great movie to watch at a time of disturbing social and international events. See more Michael A @RT95249800 May 6 Gain and loss. Stet loses a father and a mother but gains an amazing opportunity, ironically through a father who doesn't want him. His choirmaster (Dustin Hoffman) goals him into fulfilling an amazing talent in the face of a cruel and jealous competitor. Stet does just that in a stunning solo performance, only to suffer the loss of the gift of a beautiful voice as he reaches puberty. His father, deeply moved by Stet's performance, decides to confess his secret son to his wife. Stet"s gain of a family is balanced by his choirmaster's loss as he faces a lonely retirement. Unforgettable choral music, enhanced by the beautiful voice of Benjamin Perry Wenzelberg. See more Colin M @RT35044827 03/23/2023 Enjoyable sad realistic choirboys story. What ruined the film for me is that the film failed to engage because of major casting failures. Dustin Hoffman and Kathy Bates turn in performances that SEEM intense, but neither veteran actor is able to bring genuineness or honesty to their role. Director Girard is hailed for THE RED VIOLIN, but his co-writer of that intriguing script, Canadian Don McKellar, isn't involved with this project. Instead, Ben Ripley was tapped. Ripley has an IMDB list of credits that are reliably flat, formulaic and predictable. That's a shame, because this premise could have soared -- like LES CHORISTES or MR HOLLAND'S OPUS or SISTER STORY, which are generally formulaic and predicable, but transcend those issues with emotional appeal.
