Critic Reviews for The Island at the Top of the World
The Arctic looks like a melted dessert, the Viking village like a low-rent neighborhood in Disneyland, and the Vikings themselves like Hell's Angels on Halloween.
Unimaginative plot, interminable dialogue in 'Old Norse', some pointless love interest, and a particularly repulsive poodle.
Stunningly photographed scenery and convincing visual effects make this film one of Disney's more believable efforts.
So-so Disney spectacle with not so special effects.
Loved it as a kid, but I haven't seen it since.
Audience Reviews for The Island at the Top of the World
Another picturesque live-action Disney adventure that is well-directed by Robert Stevenson, but it doesn't carry the same charm as his other expedition movies such as In Search Of The Castaways. Perhaps it could have used a song or two to make it more memorable. Otherwise I enjoyed it and liked the film's Scandinavian atmosphere. (First viewing - 11/7/2009)
Colorful but best for the kiddies.
Decent enough family film. Has plot twists that most kids under 15 won't see coming, and and special effects that were good for the pre-ILM (Star Wars) years Filled with both historical points and cliches, this is a good film to use in starting conversations with school kids. Many adults will remember Hartman later hosted Good Morning America for several years. One of the last scripts by Joss Wheden's (Avengers & Buffy) grand-dad, John.
