In a nutshell, Satoshi Miki's Turtles Swim Faster Than Expected does enough to be an enjoyable sit through.
The plot is light and mysterious, although not mysterious in a suspenseful sort of way; more like, with a story about an average housewife becoming a spy, where is this story going sort of way. As for the pacing of this 90 minute production, it is moderate as to leave things unexciting, but never boring.

Part of this film is billed as a comedy and it does have some laughs. The quirky humor blends in at the appropriate times; however, there never seems to be enough of it. That's where the drama portion of this picture comes in to play. The spy aspect of the story is also somewhat of a mislead, because other than a piece of it's finale, it never comes across as a typical spy flick at all.

Juri Ueno has that allure around her that ends up as nice fit with the road this film goes down. Aoi Yu is quite the delight, although under-utilized. Ryo Iwamatsu and Eri Fuse provide good supporting characters.

Despite the lack of memorable events Turtles Swim Faster Than Expected still winds up as a pleasant viewing. yo aoi is a great watch here as a bored housewife, who at times comes off as a amelie like charactor, going about her life, imagineing things and looking at her life, its when shes recruited by some agents to become a spy , a very low key spy at that, and her tasks and training begin, within this her relationship wioth her more outgoing friend cooming into play, as some people may know, japanes comedy isnt laugh out loud funny especially to westerners, but thats a small part to it, its observations on her life are much better, and the story goes places, it comes off rather well, it looks great, and knows what it wants to be, a great asian film for someone wanting something a bit diferent

This was advertised as a comedy, so I expected it to be funnier than it was, (though it was funny in places). Story is kind of strange, about a girl who gets hired to be a spy as she is so ordinary, but never has to actually do anything much. Was definitely better in it's first half and drags more as the unsatisfactory end comes nearer. Not a bad film, but could have been better.
